The Global Warming and climate change are taking their roll on the resources of the earth and at present rates of consumption we will very soon need EXTRA EARTHS to meet the present rate of growth of mankind. In fact the present generation has already consumed 1.2, EARTHS if measured in terms of Carbon Footprints and hence the need to Reduce consumption and waste, Reuse materials and things and Recycle waste and other possible materials. The mindless exploitation of natural resources has thus put the present & future young generations at considerable ecological disadvantage, risk and shock. They are thus the MAJOR STAKEHOLDERS of the environmental sweepstakes.

The importance and need, therefore, of sensitizing and awakening them to the impending perils can hardly be overemphasized.

Nature Foundation (India), in the forefront of spreading awareness about Nature and Environment, has decided to address this environmentally sensitive segment through the GREEN UMBRELLA programme with the co-operation and blessings of Sh. M.L. Dewan and Global Warming Reduction Centre.

The “Green” stands for clean and green environment and “Umbrella”
symbolizes protection, conservation and coming together of like minded individuals.

It is hoped that the army of “Green-Literates”, thus created would be able to face the challenges of climate change in an able manner because, FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED.

The “Green Umbrella” will be given to the participating schools symbolizing that the students of this school are better equipped to face the challenges of climate change etc.

The competition will be in the nature of Essays, Innovative writings or Drawing competitions depending on the school/ students. It will be a year long programme and at the end of the year- all umbrellas will assemble at India Gate; this will be the Green Out.

The competition will initially be in the NCR region and in due course become Pan –Indian. There will be three Annual Awards. It is proposed to give these awards as 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the name and style of Patron of Global Warming Reduction Centre and doyen of economic ecology Prof. M.S Swaminathan and Nature Foundation (India) “Green”

The programme was inaugurated for 2009-10 by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, the father of Green Revolution in India on 4th April 2009, at Russian Culture Centre by unfolding a “Green Umbrella” which had Green slogans printed over it.

Dr. Swaminathan and Prof. M.L. Dewan (chairman of Global Warming Reduction Centre) autographed the umbrella, signifying the formal launch of the programme.
